We All Look for Holes in our Road System Have You Scene This One Yet?
One of the most important efforts in the construction of a good asphalt pavement is the density. Proper compaction at the correct temperature as well as a good
mix design are important to achieving this. In almost all cases a 95% density is looked at for a proper placement. This said the below square represents a
Square Yard of pavement. The white square inside this black square is a representation of the total air void that a 95% density pavement offers. This
represents the hole in each square yard that allows water to enter the pavement system. Water being one of the greatest detriments to pavement this is
one of the most overlooked problems in our road building process. To overcome this issue flexibility has been the answer.
KEEP GOOD PAVEMENTS FLEXIBLE BY PROACTIVE EFFORTS EARLY.
This is a 5" x 5" square - with the center white square being 5% of the larger (1/20th)
5" x 5" = 25" x 0.05 = 1.25 sq. inches
In a square yard this represents a hole 8" x 8" or 64 square inches.
Even with a quality pavement, water can find its way into your system. Your system needs help from day one. Otherwise it's like having a screen door in a submarine.
